Snow Leopards in Tomur

ISLT and Xinjiang Conservation Foundation launched a major snow leopard project in far western China in 2004.  Surveys are being conducted in the many mountainous areas of the province.  The most recent field work was conducted in the Tien Shan mountains in and near the Tomur Nature Reserve.  Chinese scientists leading the study found snow leopards to be numerous in some areas, but serious conservation concerns were apparent.  These included mining, logging, grazing and illegal hunting among others.  A full report with several photos of the study area has recently been completed and is available through the SLN bibliography.  (http://www.snowleopard.org/islt/procite/mmsnow04.pdf)
